Have you ever tried searching for easy ways to have a better sleep? Your answer might be either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.

Nevertheless, I can remember the days I spent looking for the easiest ways of having a better sleep.

I came across with an amazing technique which made me really curious. What do you think of, when you hear the word “Earthing?”

Yeah, you are right, I also initially thought, that earthing is something related to electricity as we were taught in physics. To my own surprise the science behind this phenomenon is much similar.

What is earthing?

Earthing (aka grounding) refers to the direct contact of skin with the earth’s surface by walking barefoot. The surface can be grass, sand, rocks, small stones or simply soil.

What are the benefits?

  • Did you know that earthing decreases body cortisol levels resulting the increase of melatonin?
  • Melatonin released by the pineal gland relates to the control of sleep-wake cycle and helps you to have a better sleep and it increases the quality of your sleep as well.
  • Low cortisol levels also results in low stress levels which will put you into a better mood.

Effects of earthing can also go beyond the improvement of sleep and reduction of stress;

  • Earthing also relieves chronic pain conditions.
  • Electrophysiological effects of earthing will relieve you of PMS (pre-menstrual stress), Asthma conditions, Hypertension, Rheumatoid arthritis and also from many more conditions caused by inflammation.

You might wonder how this happens

Our bodies are covered with electric fields induced by static charges. As we were taught in school, Earth’s surface is negatively charged. Since current travels towards a negative potential, lightning rods are grounded to the earth’s surface to lessen the damage caused by lightning strikes. Exhibiting the same physics, free electrons of the earth is flowed to the body, neutralising the static electric field which was induced on the body.

This results in the elimination of any static electrical charge on our bodies. Thus leads to the diminishment of inflammation and furthermore, the health conditions caused by inflammation. This helps to relieve acute and chronic pain conditions. (Inflammation is a condition where your immunity system starts to malfunction.)

Earthing also stabilises the release of cortisol in the body.

In conclusion

Earthing at bare minimum results in better sleep, more energy, good moods and all of the above. Moreover, walking barefoot stimulates the nerves in feet which consequently improves the nervous system of the body. Improved nervous system helps in increasing a person’s immunity making that person stronger and less allowing towards diseases.

Small changes in lifestyle might not seem important to you or you might not even notice them. But your body does. While living in a urban complex and not taking adequate time to connect with nature doesn't seem like a healthy habit. We should try not to forget every single one of us, is a part of nature. Sometimes the only natural thing in your house might be you. Taking your shoes off and walking bare-feet is THE bare minimum we can do to remind ourselves that we are a salient part of the sublime nature.
